Chapter Sixteen

H arper had smiled when she saw the name of the caller, taking the good-natured teasing for what it was. “Hello, John, were your ears burning? Maeve said to tell you that you’d better have good news for us.”

“She’s one bossy wench. Don’t tell her I said that.”

“I won’t if you do, in fact, have news, good or otherwise.”

“Well, seems Carol Martin and Tony Burch have a connection going back years.”

“Ha! We know that already. In fact, I was going to tell you.”

“Oh, Yeah? Well, what do you need me for? Sounds like the CCC is doing fine without me. So, maybe I can get back to my real job here.”

Harper protested, laughing. “No, we need you, honest. Did you find out who was booked into the seat beside Carol Martin on that Paris flight?”

“I had to call in a favor for that one, but no word back just yet. Also, I might have a lead on that mysterious blue truck Tonya claimed she saw. As I said before, I couldn’t find any record of Tony selling his truck. Pickup trucks weren’t as numerous around that time as they are now, but there were a few blue ones, I’m sure. However, Tony did own a truck that could fit the bill. I got a tip last night from an old school friend that you might be interested in. He said Tony often used his grandfather’s barn to store stuff, or at least he did. When he left home to wander around the country to Las Vegas and New York, he stored a lot of his things there.”

“Did you go look?”

“A few problems with that. His grandfather is dead, the barn is locked up, and I don’t have enough information for a warrant just yet, but I’m working on it. I just have a feeling that old truck is in that barn,” John said.

“So, you did go look but couldn’t get in, I’m hearing you say. I was thinking it was at the bottom of the river or all burned out down a ravine somewhere.”

“Well, Harper, you might be right, but even though I’m not of the original “peculiar founders of Steepwick stock,” and don’t get your mysterious insight, I get cop feelings.”

Trying not to laugh, Harper said, “Okay, I believe you, and I have great respect for your cop feelings, John. I have one other piece of news. I found, or rather Einstein found, a gold charm or locket in that stretch of trees right at the place where Jim Martin went off the cliff. And before you ask, Maeve has already reported it to the county sheriff.”

John made a teasing groan. “I can hear the wheels spinning already. You and the ladies have already solved the case. Carol Martin pushed her husband off the cliff. Is that the theory?”

“Hey, we don’t jump to those conclusions. Have some respect on your side, too.”

“Sorry, just teasing you. What are you thinking…and no judgment from my side.”

“We don’t even know if it’s Carol’s charm, for one thing, so we’re not putting the cart before the horse.
